Four simple ways to check a pouch.

FSSAI publishes household food checks[1]. These simple checks can help you spot starch, poor storage or an invalid licence number. They do not replace a laboratory test.

Test 1 — starch, with tincture of iodine

Iodine gives a quick indication of added starch in milk powder and other milk products.

  1. 01Make a solution. Stir about one teaspoon of milk powder into half a cup of water until it dissolves.
  2. 02Add tincture of iodine. Add two or three drops of tincture of iodine, available at any chemist.
  3. 03Read the colour. A blue or blue-black colour indicates starch has been added. If the liquid stays a pale yellow-brown, no starch was detected.

Test 2 — the solubility check

Spray dried powder should mix evenly into warm water. Persistent grit, hard lumps or heavy sediment can point to moisture or poor storage. This is a basic quality check, not an adulteration result.

Test 3 — the senses

Good skimmed milk powder is cream-white, free-flowing and has a mild milk smell. Do not use it if it has hard caking, unusual grey or brown specks, or a stale or soapy smell[1].

Test 4 — check that our licence is real

Search FSSAI licence 10416310000177 on the official FoSCoS portal. The result should show a valid licence in Darbhanga. If the number does not resolve, contact us before buying or stocking the product.

What a home test cannot do

Home checks are useful first checks, but they cannot measure protein, moisture, acidity or microbiology. Those require a laboratory. Licence and product details are listed on the quality page.
